McCall, Idaho: First Hunting Story, Mule Deer.

You want to take me on?
Here's My Story.......
AS TOLD BY DEER HEAD-
"It took a motorcycle to haul me out.  I was on Rattle Snake Creek in the Boise National Forest.  My story starts as I am on the run from two hunters shooting at me.  I jump and dodge with at least two shots whizzing by my sides.  Hunters!  I can out run them, easy."  I thought.

He stood his ground, a sophomore from high school.

"One shot, I was running, and then I was down.  The hunters behind me never even hit a hair on my hide.  I became know as Harry, Steves' deer.  Good shot kid. Now I  enjoy the gatherings up at the family cabin."

Fishing and camping weekend

Illustrated by Rachael H.

A very good trip to a remote Mountain lake.  Day 1- household chores, gathering the equipment, packing the viecal and loading up the family, including dogs.  Made it up to the lake with 1hr of day light left to fish.  The kid's casting skills improved, my laugage got slightly colorful and the dogs hung out. There were a lot of fingerling's  nibbling. We were shore fishing, lost 2 hooks to the bottom snags, and I tied my first line knot and still have the hook!  I also moved the bobble down the line so the hook wouldn't drag on the bottom as it was reeled in.  Meet some fishermen from Eugene and another from Seattle who says he caught a big one.(didn't see it.)

Drove down to a campsite in the dark, set up tent and started fire with kids' help on faning oxygen to the fire, all without a flashlight.  We enjoyed marshmallows and gramcrakers by the fire.  Cuddled up nice and warm in the backpackers' tent, a relict from my hiking days back country in the high searias, and 0 degree sleeping bags.

Day 2- got the fire started adding my large steel teapot and had hot coco for the kid and tea for me.  For breakfast we had instant cream of wheat.  The dogs had their regular scoop of dog food.  The kid made a list of what to bring next trip: 1.  Mattress pad under sleeping bags. 2.  Cinnamon for cereal.  3. Hot dogs. 4. Extra chair and 4.  Flashlight.

Meet Sam, a good old boy, chalk full of good information, like where was the good drinking water.  Cooked first batch of popcorn on fire coals for snack and headed down the stream to fish.

Meet some Angus Beef farmers and enjoyed sharing fishing pole that still worked, the other fishing pole was in time out from my not making it work with my talk.  Kid made a new friend.  More casting practice, and this time in faster moving waters.   Decided to head back early and over all had a great time doing, teaching, sharing, and just being.

Three hunters plus.  Two deer were tagged.  The guys drove out and hiked around about 2 miles away from camp.  Two shots fired, each one dropped a deer where it stood.

Camping: August 2011 Oregon Trip Fly Fishing too

Down Past Foster Lake and way up into the Mountains

This is the fly fishing creek

Me posing pretty.

Top of the road
We found a perfect spot above Sweet Home, not crowded on Labor Day weekend.
Had the pleasure of meeting and handshake with Clarence, a local caretaker, and other folk who travel through this outdoor space.  Photographer Mike caught & released 3 nice fish, fly fishing.  The weather was warm, the sky clear and quite a nice night view for star gazing.  The creek water was cold and clear, with fish, bugs, very large amphibians and some moths last resting place died on the water surface as I watched them flow by with the little rivers current.
Jeep riding up and down was exciting for us road blazers, from the  top of the road to creeping the jeep down dirt and rock road to camp.  A coyote cruising by at night got Little Bear to use his "If you don't want excitement, don't come into our camp area", growl.   The dogs, Earl and Bear had a blast hanging out with us also.  Earl had to be leashed due to the fact he would sneak, 'round about to the camp kitchen up from the creek.  Little Bear, climbed onto a good size rock like an old chimp, following behind Rachael and was not quite sure how to get off when the kid continued exploring downstream.

Sunday Fishing ! Then pan Fry caught Fish.

ready to fry after photo shoot

So this is how to make it look bigger.
Sunday, went fishing up to a small remote Lake in the state of Oregon.  The water rippled with the littlest fry jumping for the mayflies.
Three of us in the Boat with a mascot.  I put  the worm on the hook,  despite its wiggling and guts,  and caught the fish, a 12 inch fish (I think mike was feeding my ego).  A beautiful rainbow trout.  "The colors were very bright." Mike said later.  Carl netted and took it off the hook.  Mike was driving the boat and Scooter was moving towards the chicken snack.  Total fish caught 3, 1 keeper.  Later.......I held the fish and started the gutting process.  Mike helped me clean it out. I bagged and put in fridge.  Next day, I fried it up in a little olive oil the meat tasted good.
